Item-Based & Legacy DNA Testing: What It Is and When You Need It

Not every situation is the same, so not every test should be either. Maybe the person you need answers about has passed. Maybe you need to keep this private for now. Maybe it's for court, and it has to hold up. Whatever your reason, there's a path to the truth that fits it. Here's how to know which one is yours.

Not every DNA question has a simple answer available. Sometimes the person you need to test is no longer here. Sometimes they're unreachable, unwilling, or the situation calls for privacy before anything else. That's where item-based DNA testing comes in and it's more common than most people realize.

What Is Item-Based DNA Testing?

Standard DNA testing uses a direct cheek swab from each person involved. Item-based testing is different; it uses a personal item that may carry usable DNA when a direct sample isn't possible.

Commonly Tested Items

  • Toothbrushes

  • Razors

  • Hairbrushes (with the root attached)

  • Worn clothing or hats

  • Cups, cigarette butts, or chewed gum

  • Nail clippings

Not every item will yield results, DNA quality depends on how the item was stored and how much biological material is present. We'll tell you honestly whether your item is a good candidate before you pay for testing.

When Families Choose This Option

Legacy Testing — Confirming a biological relationship to someone who has passed away, often for inheritance, family history, or simply personal closure.

Unavailable or Unwilling Parties: When the other person can't or won't participate directly, but you still need answers for yourself.

Privacy: Some situations call for testing quietly, before involving anyone else.

Important to Know Before You Book

Item-based results are for personal knowledge only; they are not court-admissible. If you need results for child support, custody, or immigration, you'll need our Legal DNA Testing service instead, which requires a witnessed chain-of-custody collection.

How It Works

  1. Call or text 843-543-2533 and describe the item you have

  2. We'll confirm whether it's testable and give you one clear price, no surprise fees

  3. Package and ship (or drop off) the item securely

  4. Receive confidential results within the standard turnaround window

If you've been carrying a question without a clear way to ask it, this may be the option you didn't know existed.
